SHOXX FiLE Vol.1 LUNA SEA 1990~1996

I’m not a great fan of photo-books. However, I received this from my friend today. (:

The ultimate SHOXX article LUNA SEA guide (part one). This 600 page book contains all articles that SHOXX had published on LUNA SEA during 1990~1996. Starting from their name change from Lunacy to LUNA SEA right until the unforgettable Mafuyu no Yagai concert…600 pages of pure LUNA SEA goodness.

It’s a soft cover book. There is a removable jacket. The original comes with 5 postcards but since mine is second-hand, the post cards have probably been lost somewhere before this book came into my hands.

There is still a ton for me to learn about LUNA SEA even though I cannot read the Japanese writing. After all, a picture tells a thousand words.

Before your mind starts wondering into honestly believing that I am a little loony in the head…maybe you would have realised that I am a crazy LUNA SEA fanatic by now.
There are many things I respect about LUNA SEA – their undeniably unbelievable talent at making music of course comes first and foremost!

LUNA SEA’s journey began in 1989, when hide (X JAPAN) signed them onto YOSHIKI’s label “EXTASY RECORDS”. Ever since the release of their first full-length self titled album, LUNA SEA continued to rise to the top, reaching the top spot on Oricon charts in 1994, with their 4th single, “TRUE BLUE”. Even though as of 2000, LUNA SEA has stopped working together as a band, all members still stay somewhat active within the music industry. I believe most people would have probably heard of SUGIZO, who played with X JAPAN during their recent March 2008 concerts and who is also a member of S.K.I.N. together with YOSHIKI, Gackt and Miyavi. RYUICHI and INORAN have started Tourbillon together with H.Hayama, who is said to be avex’s “secret weapon”. J has an relatively successful solo career and Shinya mainly works with other artists as a support drummer but has started a group called “Potbelly”. Even though none of the members’ solo works are remotely close to the success LUNA SEA has experienced, each project has a varying flavour to the other.

LUNA SEA is the third most wanted band to reunite in Japan. Even though they did hold a One Night Dejavu concert during Christmas Eve of 2007, I’m still waiting for the day when LUNA SEA will come together again to create music everyone is waiting to hear.

Perhaps the most significant turning point in these recent years, was the introduction of hide’s music into my life. Possibly, there are about a million and one other people who can proudly proclaim that hide is their hero. For me personally, the word “hero” is just too vague.

hide is a person whose music, visual style, amazing charisma and talent inspires people young and old even after his passing ten years ago. hide is, was and will be one of the most influential people in modern day Japanese visual music.

I was told that a Japanese magazine journalist once wrote, “The visual music scene started and ended with hide.”

All original hide releases that I own

The one thing that I most respect about hide is his innovative ways, his endless river of creativity and his absurd way of thinking that seems to be ahead of everyone (of his time).

In his 1996 live, hide urged fans to use the computer to EMAIL him fan-mail.
In 1997, hide had a website and started an online blog, recording his thoughts and promoting various artists whom he supported or were close to him.
In hide’s third (and final) studio album, the opening track features the sound of the internet dial-up tone.

Did we even have internet in 1996? Mind you, my mother only knew “blogs” existed last year!
